Synergy of education and IT business: How Kharkiv IT Cluster updates IT education in Ukraine

IT Cluster IT Cluster

Ukraine has long established itself as a centre of IT talent globally. Our developers work at leading international companies, find startups, and win prestigious competitions.

However, despite these achievements, IT education in Ukraine requires significant updates. Graduates face a reality where there is a huge gap between what they were taught at universities and what companies need. That is why it is crucial to find ways to update education to become as dynamic and innovative as the IT industry itself.

1. The Speed of Changes in the IT Industry

The IT industry is developing very quickly, and technologies that were cutting-edge just a few years ago can now seem outdated. At the same time, higher education programs often fail to keep pace with these changes, leading to a significant gap between what is taught at universities and what the labour market requires.

💡 Solution: Collaboration with Leading IT Companies in Ukraine

IT companies can actively participate in the development of curricula and syllabi, offering current requirements and technologies used in real projects. This will help create a more practical focus in education, and students will be able to directly apply the knowledge they gain in their professional activities.

2. Lack of Practical Focus

One of the main problems is the insufficient number of practical sessions and real cases in curricula. Students often face difficulties when transitioning to work, as they lack experience in real projects, and the knowledge gained at universities does not always meet market demands.

💡 Solution: Updating Course Syllabi According to Modern Technological Trends

To prepare students for real working conditions, syllabi must be regularly updated, taking into account the latest technological trends. This includes not only programming but also trends in areas like artificial intelligence, blockchain, cybersecurity, augmented reality, etc.

3. Brain Drain

A large number of Ukrainian students, particularly in the IT field, leave for studies or work abroad. This is due to low wages for entry-level specialists, limited career development opportunities, and the stereotype about poor-quality IT education in Ukraine.

💡 Solution: Compliance with International IT Specialist Training Standards

To enhance the competitiveness of Ukrainian specialists in the global market, it is essential to align training programs with international standards. This includes integrating an interdisciplinary approach, where students acquire knowledge not only in technical disciplines but also in business strategies, communications, project management, and other areas that help them adapt flexibly to changing market conditions.

All Solutions in One Project!

Kharkiv IT Cluster has become a source of change, creating a unique project that ensures synergy between education and IT business. Its goal is to update curricula and ensure that every graduate in IT-related fields from Ukrainian universities meets the junior+ level and can confidently start a career in their chosen field.

The project involves reviewing, updating, and practically implementing revamped IT courses. It is conducted under the supervision of IT company experts who have extensive experience in the field of information technologies.

💪 Key Benefits of the Project

  1. Experience of IT specialists. Companies such as PioGroup Software, Yael Acceptic, Quantum, SoftServe, WebMeridian, Akvelon, GlobalLogic Ukraine and Artjoker, actively participate in forming the curricula.
  2. A new generation of specialists. Over 1000 students are already receiving education through new, more practical programs.
  3. Orientation towards international standards. Coursework and disciplines meet global requirements and international educational standards.

Scaling the Project in the 2024-2025 Academic Year

Currently, an active phase of work is underway on two project seasons, covering more students and disciplines. As of today:

  • 12 specialists from 8 companies are helping to develop the courses;
  • 69 syllabi have been submitted for review, and 22 disciplines have already been updated;
  • 16 disciplines have been validated, while 10 others are in the validation stage and will be approved by the end of the academic year.

These figures reflect significant progress in modernizing the educational process and bringing it closer to the current industry requirements. As a result of a systematic approach to updating curricula, we are already seeing a positive transformation in IT education.

Round Tables as Platforms for Knowledge Sharing

A key element of the project is meetings that provide a direct exchange of experience between lecturers and experts.

One of the latest events was a round table on «Software Requirements Engineering». Lecturers received recommendations for updating the curriculum, discussed the reviewed syllabus, and had the opportunity to ask experts questions.

After the event, participants received practical case studies and recommendations from experts via email so they could delve deeper into the information and apply it in their work.

The Importance of Cooperation Between Business and Education

This project is a strategic tool for the development of Ukraine’s IT industry. Close collaboration between IT companies and higher education institutions not only reduces the gap between theoretical knowledge and real practical skills but also creates new standards for training young specialists.

Business acts as a driving force for change, defining technological trends, and current competency requirements, and providing resource support in updating curricula.

Such a partnership format is key to the sustainable development of Ukraine’s IT sector, shaping competitive specialists.

How to Join?

This project opens up great opportunities for universities and companies to get involved in changes within IT education. For universities, it’s a chance to stay ahead in preparing future specialists, and for IT companies, it’s an opportunity to create a workforce that meets the demands of modern business.
