In the sky — drones. On the ground — military UAV operators. Behind the monitors — the StreamTeam crew.

On May 19–20, the Lviv region hosted a stage of the “Wild Drones” competition, where 19 teams from the Defense Forces of Ukraine showcased their drone piloting skills. To make the event accessible to viewers, StreamTeam took charge of the filming, directing, and technical preparation of the broadcast.

Here’s a look at what happened behind the scenes.

A championship where the main tool is a drone

“Wild Drones” is a unique championship for military UAV operators. Participants do not run 100-meter sprints or play football. Instead, they search for targets from the air, navigate obstacle courses, and compete to complete missions faster and more accurately than their opponents.

Military personnel from various units of Ukraine’s Defense Forces come to the tournament, many of them arriving directly from the front line. For these participants, the event is not only about competition but also an opportunity to meet with their comrades, exchange practical experience, and communicate directly with the engineers and manufacturers developing drone technologies.

When a drone accurately hits a target or completes a challenging course section within seconds, all eyes are on the operator. However, enabling thousands of viewers to witness these moments requires another team working behind the scenes.

At the “Wild Drones” tournament, that team was StreamTeam.

What was StreamTeam's role?

To ensure viewers could easily follow the action among dozens of drones, teams, and challenges, StreamTeam carefully designed every aspect of the broadcast experience. Real-time results and participant information were displayed on screen, each team received a dedicated video presentation, and the most exciting moments were instantly available through replay features.

The video production relied on the Blackmagic 2ME Constellation system, which served as the central hub for managing all cameras and live scenes. Using SuperSource, multiple camera angles could be displayed simultaneously, while 8 audio channels helped reproduce the sound of the event so that the viewer's experience would be as close to the real thing as possible.

Throughout the event, the StreamTeam crew monitored every aspect of the production in real time, ensuring system stability, safeguarding the broadcast, and responding immediately to any technical challenges.

“For viewers, a broadcast should feel simple: open the stream and instantly understand what’s happening. In reality, this requires a huge number of synchronized processes—  video feeds, graphics, results, statistics, and replays. During ‘Wild Drones,’ we focused on ensuring all this information reached the broadcast as quickly as possible. For the next stage, we are already preparing new tools that will accelerate this process several times over,” said Volodymyr Kulibaba, Head and one of the Video Directors at StreamTeam.

The team is already working on the next phase of the project. The goal is to minimize the delay between events happening on the field and their appearance in competition systems. The expected outcome is a fourfold increase in data processing and display speed.
