In November, a smart parking system based on machine learning algorithms was launched at SoftServe HQ on Sadova Str. The system proved to be extremely effective at finding free parking spots and saving drivers’ time. Watch a short video about the solution. How it works A developed solution consists of a mobile application and LCD display located right at the entrance to the parking. Applying machine learning algorithms, the system analyses the images received from the cameras placed on the roof. Having been processed, the information immediately appears on the screen showing free, occupied, and reserved parking spots. Unlike similar market solutions offered, the smart parking system doesn’t need hundreds of sensors and miles of cables to function effectively. Thus, it’s a perfect solution for open parking spaces that haven’t been originally equipped with needed digital systems. SoftServe’s solution deploys only a few low-priced cameras. The system is learning constantly, especially in regard to image recognition under various weather conditions. More solutions to come from the team of developers, as they are currently working on smart gates system. After successful identification of automobile plates, it is supposed to open the gates automatically.   What’s next In autumn, in conjunction with Cisco, one of its largest clients, SoftServe partnered with the Lviv City Council to implement a pilot project of installing smart parking system in Lviv. At the first stage, they are to launch a prototype system analyzing occupied spots within the three biggest parking spaces located in the city center. "We will install 9 video-sensors to monitor parking situation on Mitskevich Square, Shevchenko Avenue, and Slovatskogo Street", comments Maksym Opryshko, Product Manager at SoftServe. “The first step in this project is to collect and analyze data about parking, average time spent on finding a free spot, peak load etc.” Further steps of this initiative include developing a mobile application for Lviv citizens that will navigate them towards the nearest free parking spot and process non-cash payments for parking. Information on free spots availability is supposed to be updated in real time. Drivers' access to the information on free parking spots will partly reduce traffic congestion in the city center. Researches show that about 30% of all traffic in the central parts of metropolises is generated by drivers looking for a free spot.
