How IT Changes Lives: Stories from SDA Developers
The world of IT opens doors for anyone ready to work hard and learn. This is exactly what the developers at SDA prove — a software development company that helps startups and established businesses create cutting-edge SaaS solutions, online marketplaces, and applications.
We spoke with five SDA developers about how they changed careers, navigated challenging paths, and succeeded in the tech industry. They shared their experiences, challenges, and advice for those just beginning their programming journey.
What influenced the choice of IT?
Everyone comes to IT for different reasons: some thanks to the support of loved ones, some due to the desire to change their field of work, and others in search of a profession that truly brings satisfaction. The stories of different people show that the path to this field can be unexpected, but the main thing is to find your place.
In many cases, a decisive factor is the support of loved ones or inspiration from acquaintances who have already taken this step. For example, Oleksandr notes that his journey into IT began thanks to a close relative who was already working in the field. «He became not only an inspiration but also a mentor who supported me at the start of my career,» says Oleksandr about his brother.
Vladyslav, who previously worked in sales, was encouraged by his girlfriend — she convinced him that his knowledge of English and communication skills could be an advantage in IT: «That’s how I ended up in IT, but I quickly realized that sales weren’t for me. Tired of constant interaction with clients, I transitioned to development and found a job that I truly enjoy.»
Some stories are particularly inspiring. For example, Yakiv, who used to work as an industrial climber, was searching for something that would bring him real satisfaction, and as he put it: «…it seems I have found it in IT.»
«A deep disappointment in medicine and the lack of prospects in the field finally pushed me to change careers,» says Oleksandr Sh., who, after losing faith in medicine, decided to shift to IT to bring his ideas to life in development.
And Maksym’s story will resonate with those just starting their career path: «I became interested in IT at a crossroads after graduating from university. I had never considered this field before, as it seemed out of reach. But a wonderful person advised me to take a closer look at it—and I am endlessly grateful that I listened.»
Challenges on the path to IT
Starting a career in IT is not just about excitement for a new field but also serious challenges. One of the biggest hurdles is the vast amount of information that needs to be absorbed. As Oleksandr recalls, the first frontend and backend roadmaps seemed overly complex to him, but gradually fear turned into a passion for learning.
«Transitioning to a new profession requires constantly finding time and opportunities for learning, regardless of circumstances. But it taught me perseverance,» — Yakiv, Software Engineer at SDA.
Another common challenge is balancing learning with work. For example, Maksym worked in a fast-food restaurant for 11–12 hours a day, and in his free time, he studied using YouTube courses. He repeatedly doubted whether it was worth continuing, but his determination to achieve his goal prevailed.
«I studied independently through YouTube, woke up earlier to study in the morning, and set aside another hour after work. There were many moments when it seemed like I wouldn’t be able to make it, that the amount of knowledge was too vast and it was all in vain. Sometimes, I just wanted to give up. But motivation and the desire to change my life kept me going, and they helped me stay on track,» — Maksym, Software Engineer at SDA.
The journey into IT can be challenging and unpredictable, but these very challenges strengthen, help develop, and allow one to reach new goals! 🚀
The most significant moments in a career
Success in IT can manifest in different ways: for some, it is the creation of their own product, while for others, it is confidence in their skills.
For example, Vladyslav is most proud of the startup «Drukarnia» which he created together with his girlfriend in 2023. It is a blog platform that promotes the development of Ukrainian content.
«The most important moment in a career is when you fully acquire the skill of learning. When you are no longer afraid of encountering a technology in a new project that you don’t know 100% because you are confident in your ability to master it quickly,» — notes Oleksandr, Software Engineer at SDA.
Yakiv, on the other hand, believes that the biggest challenges are still ahead, and they will define his professional path: «I don’t highlight specific projects as achievements in my career. For me, success is what I am doing now and where I am. And I am sure that the toughest challenges are yet to come.»
Advice for those who want to start a career in IT
Starting a career in IT is a mix of excitement, doubts, and overcoming personal fears. No one understands this better than those who have already walked this path. We asked our heroes to share advice that can help those just starting out. These are the words of people who once had doubts too but managed to take a step toward new opportunities.
Maksym believes that even financial motivation can be a good stimulus — if you enjoy the work, you can not only earn well but also find satisfaction in it: «Of course, everyone chooses their path, and there are many professions in the world that combine stability and interest. But if you decide to try IT, be ready to invest a lot of time and effort. As the Latin saying goes: Per aspera ad astra — through hardships to the stars.»
«Any profession in IT is a path of continuous development, and that is what makes it unique,» says Vladyslav. «To move forward successfully, it’s worth understanding a few key things. First, mistakes are not the enemy but the most valuable learning tool. Second, don’t be afraid to start small. Third, IT is not only about knowledge but also about community. And most importantly — find your motivation, as it will drive you through tough times.»
Oleksandr Sh. also emphasizes the importance of community but also reminds us of the need for practice: «During learning, it is crucial to practice as much as possible, as knowledge is best absorbed through practice. Finding a community of like-minded people helps exchange experiences, gain support, and find motivation.»
If you are still hesitating, Yakiv gives simple but very effective advice: «For those who are afraid of changing their profession, I advise just one thing: don’t be afraid to start. The main thing is to find what you truly enjoy. Everything else is just a matter of time and effort.»
