Spalah IT Brain Ring started on the 26th of September. It was organized by Education Hub “Spalah” and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) under the auspices of public union Kharkiv IT Cluster.

The competition was attended by over 600 pupils of 6-9 form of 128 schools of Kharkiv Region. Participation in brain-rings was absolutely free of charge. The main goal and task of team tournament was the formation of cognitive interest to the field of information technology, promotion and contribution to pupils’ professional direction to IT-field.

For that reason professionally directed lectures were held before each round within the framework of Kids2IT project  launched by Kharkiv IT Cluster. The lectures were delivered by IT-specialists – volunteers of 10 IT-companies, who told about the peculiarities of work in IT-sector and shared their stories.

During three weeks, the participants of IT Brain Ring were passing qualifying rounds. At each stage only 1 of 8 teams reached the semifinal.

Spalah holds IT Brain Ring competitions for the second year. Last time 64 schools competed in the tournament. According to Serhii Belobrov, CEO of Spalah, the idea of holding IT brain-rings for children came of itself.

“Many our clients who studied in the IT-school asked to develop courses for children. We have created course named “Basics of IT for Children” and included into its program perfunctory consideration of all the areas of IT for a child to understand from an early age the fundamental difference between them, come up with the future profession and start learning it just now. We also decided to hold competitions to grant free places to the most able pupils.

We hold a couple of such competitions among the ten schools of Kharkiv City and launched the course. The result exceeded our expectations. Many children were then admitted to the full course of web development and studied at the same level with older students.

In the course of the project we met with guys from USAID (United States Agency for International Development). They gave us funding for the implementation of competitions at the city level. And already this year over 100 schools of Kharkiv City took part in IT Brain Ring “– told Serhii to Kharkiv IT Cluster.

This IT Brain Ring promises to be far from the last. Organizers admit that every time there appear more and more new ideas for implementation.
